SNOWFIELD - When people are talking about snowfields, they will think of extreme sports, such as snowboard, snocross, and speed flying. However, in Japan, there is folklore talking about a woman call Yuki-Onna. She is the daughter of the mountain. She sometimes wears a kimono, sometimes wears nothing. People scare at her because she eats men pneuma. This collection is combined the extreme sports and Yuki-Onna elements, using their characteristics to design. This project requests students to use calico fabric to create a jacket. The jacket can only use four types of garments, which are shirt collar, lapel, patch pocket, and envelope pocket. Based on the theme ‘SNOWFIELD’, the jacket concepts came from Yuki-Onna and extreme sports. The jacket was combined these two concepts elements to design, which is Yuki-Onna - she often wears clothes, also she eats men pneuma. On the other hand, the outfits of extreme sports, sportswear and also use extreme sports to combine with Yuki-Onna to pretend this is her habits.

Based on these elements, I took the outlines of the kimono and started to redesign the total look of it. First of all, I had taken a look at the fashion trend, I focused on sportswear and a similar outfit with kimono. The original kimono in history which is Jūnihitoe is a set of formal and highly complex kimono garments worn only by court-ladies in Japan. Translated, the term means ‘ twelve-layer robe’. Therefore, I took the number of ‘twelve’ as the main points of the jacket. Also, a throwback to Yuki-Onna, she is a woman that eats men pneuma, so I use this ‘twelve’ as the number of the men that she ate. The jacket appeared twelve buttons and those buttons are reflected blue light, just like the human pneuma are inside her body. After that, she is a woman that often wears the cloth, and sometimes wears nothing, so I keep these details on the jacket, and some of the jacket parts people can see through the jacket to see the body. Then, the fashion trend shows the buttoned pencil skirt, which is two parts of the fabric and use the button to connect it. I took these elements to use on my lapel. Also, sportswear is using a lot of different pockets, most of them using the zipper to close the opening. I develop the kimono sleeves and turned it to become functional sleeves, row the sleeves up and the patch pocket will appear and also can turn it to become a handbag.

In the end, the whole feeling of the jacket is just like a loose kimono, which is fit to the theme. The jacket has included the sport wear elements and the details of Yuki-Onna.
